Amy McGarry, Artworker at docs24

In order to be innovative and provide our clients with the best experience, getting our team culture right is really important. As docs24 grows, this becomes even more crucial. But growth always presents new challenges for how we continue to maintain our culture and values. Amy joined our team about 6 months ago. Read about how she’s finding her new role, the company culture and her position in our team:

Tell us a little about your first 6 months and what your role looks like.

I started working at docs24 at the beginning of September 2021 and have loved it so far. I work with a great team of people that I’m excited to be a part of as the company grows.

When I first joined the team, I was nervous. This was my first time working in a professional job related to my course of study at university. I wasn’t sure about how I’d fit into a new team. However, the whole team has been very welcoming and supportive from day one; from checking in on how I’m getting on and answering any questions I had, no matter how small. Everyone has really helped me settle in quickly and easily.

I really enjoy the work I do as an Artworker. My days are so varied. I could be busy setting up pharmaceutical documentation in the morning and designing marketing materials in the afternoon. Outside of client work, I was given the responsibility of reviewing the usability of the docs24 website and updating the website where necessary. I had no previous experience working on websites though my course included some User Experience design work. However, working on the docs24 website I have since gained hands-on experience in website design and maintenance. Being given opportunities to take on projects like this has really made me feel that my personal development is valued.

Already I have learned so much and can see the progress in my personal development in the six months I have been here so far. I am looking forward to continuing to learn and working with the great people here. The future for docs24 looks exciting and I’m glad to be part of that journey.

What has been your favorite thing to work on since you joined the team?

I enjoy all the work I do because it’s so varied. It gives me the opportunity to practice and improve upon different skills. If I had to pick though, I’d say my favorite thing to work on is designing marketing materials for our clients. I previously worked on a freelance basis designing adverts for a small publication, so it’s something I am familiar with. At docs24 though it’s on a much bigger scale so I still have a lot to learn. It’s one of the more creative parts of my job; I enjoy bringing the client’s design brief to life and seeing the design as a finished product, whether that’s a small flyer or a huge banner, is really satisfying.

What is one big thing you’ve learned in your role at docs24?

Working on updating the docs24 website has helped me learn a lot about website design and maintenance. The project initially started as me carrying out a usability review of the website. This then led to me implementing changes to the website that I had previously suggested. I was quite anxious about doing this because I had no previous knowledge or experience in website building; the first time Rachel, our In-house graphic designer, introduced me to the back-end of the website, I was intimidated by the number of options and settings that control the website because I didn’t understand most of them. Luckily, I was able to work alongside Rachel on this project who already understood the workings of the website. I was extremely grateful to have someone to learn from.

Looking back at it now, having made all the changes to the website I had originally proposed (and more!), I feel I have made huge progress in my knowledge and confidence. I can now confidently navigate through the website back-end knowing what most settings/options are, what they do, and how it will affect the look of the website.

What is something that has surprised you about office/work life at docs24?

I was surprised about was how involved our CEO, Jim, is in the day-to-day running of the business; he is a very familiar face in the office, and on several occasions, since I started working at docs24, he has taken the time to check in on me and see how I’m getting on and settling in. I have never even met any of the CEOs in all the previous jobs I have had so having Jim be so involved in the workplace makes me feel valued.
